Improving your focus these days and age seems like squeezing water from a stone because almost everything is calling for your attention. No, scratch that! Everything is calling for your attention!.

 

If it’s not advertisers, it’s social media clickbait. If it’s not that, it could be your friends and family seeking your attention. Leaving you with little or no time to focus and concentrate on your tasks. And as you already know, if you can’t concentrate, you won’t achieve anything worthwhile.

 

Every great person doing exploits today has spent and still spends a big chunk of their time focusing on what matters. Forget all the glamor, recognition, and celebration; they won’t be celebrated if they didn’t conquer the battle in their secret place.

 

That’s why, in this article, I’ll teach you how to improve focus and achieve your important tasks effectively.

 

But before then, let’s define what focus is.

What is focus?

 

Focus means concentrating your attention, energy, or interest on a particular thing. And the implication is that you leave one thing for another. That is, you leave the unimportant things and focus on the important things.

 

5 effective ways to improve your focus and attention span:

The Warren Buffet method:

This method on how to improve focus was adopted from the technique Warren Buffet taught his pilot, Mike Flint, about life goals. But right now, we will use it for your weekly goals or tasks.

  1. Write down 25 goals you want to achieve this week:

Write down the 25 most important goals you want to achieve this week.

ii. Out of the 25 goals you wrote in Step 1, go through them and carefully pick out the 5 most important ones. Then write them down on another piece of paper.

It won’t be easy, but it’s worth the stress. These 5 goals will become your priorities for the next 1 week.

iii. Cross out the 20 tasks and don’t think about them until you’ve achieved the first 5.

Some people tend to go back to those 20 tasks when they are yet to achieve the 5 goals. The rule is that you must finish the first 5 goals before considering the remaining 20. Because the 20 goals, for now, are the enemies that will jeopardize your success.

 

  1. Using those 5 goals, set daily tasks to achieve them:

Now that you have the five goals for this week, set daily tasks to achieve them.

For example, if one of your goals is to finish a book with 140 pages.

You can divide the pages by the 7 days of the week. That is 20 pages per day. So, your task for each day is to read 20 pages of that book. If you are committed to it, you’ll be done with the book at the end of the week.

  1. Remove all distractions and do not procrastinate:

The first step to eliminating distractions is recognizing them.

Ask yourself, “What are my distractions?”

Your distractions, for example, can be social media, games, movies, gist, emails, and so on. Identify your distractions and remove them until you achieve your goals.

  1. Exercise your body and brain:

For body exercises, you can do aerobic and cardiovascular exercises. Examples are spot jumps, mountain climbing, high knees, and jumping jacks, to name a few.

For brain exercises, you can play games like sudoku, puzzles, chess, and so on. Doing these exercises will enhance your concentration and focus.

  1. Use the Pomodoro technique:

Even if you do everything I have said here, you can still break down if you are not careful.

Your brain needs rest to focus better, think better, and stay sharper.

The Pomodoro technique states that you work for 25 minutes and rest for 5 minutes.

This enables your brain to rest a bit before you continue your work. And don’t be afraid; it won’t break your workflow. You can keep working after the 5-minute rest.
